The Job:

The Labor Relations Counsel will be a key member of the labor relations team, helping lead the negotiation and interpretation of each of The Times’s ten collective bargaining agreements, which cover a broad range of employees in The Times’ newsroom, business and  production departments. The individual in this role will advise, support, and collaborate with business leaders, supervisors and staff throughout the company through the implementation of labor relations strategies and activities that support the success of The New York Times.

 

What You Will Do:

  • Plan and develop strategy for labor negotiations and business operations.
  • Represent the company in labor negotiations, meetings with union representatives and counsel, interactions with federal, state and local government agencies.
  • Develop and lead training sessions on labor and employment best practices including performance management, corrective/disciplinary actions and compliance with collective bargaining agreements, company policies and labor and employment laws.
  • Provide preventive, proactive advice on a broad range of topics including discrimination, harassment, wrongful discharge, performance management, employee discipline and separations, workplace investigations, severance programs, leaves of absence and accommodations, recruiting, hiring, benefits, wage and hour, compensation, separation agreements, and unemployment and workers’ compensation issues.
  • Investigate and respond to employee complaints and union grievances.
    Work with the Company’s Human Resources Department to develop, maintain and enforce workplace policies and procedures.
  • Analyze payroll and benefits data and ensure compliance with multi-employer and company benefits programs.
  • Keep current on changes to relevant labor and employment laws and regulations, and advise managers and business leaders on the same.
  • Draft position statements and, where appropriate, coordinate with outside counsel in responding to unfair labor practice charges, discrimination complaints and other claims against the company.
  • Manage and work with outside counsel on labor and employment litigation.
  • Assist with various complex and/or sensitive projects, as assigned.

Who You Are:

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Substantial experience with delivering advice and counsel to clients such as company managers and HR representatives.
  • Strong analytical skills and attention to detail.  Should be comfortable organizing, tracking and analyzing a broad range of financial and related data.
  • Proven experience with developing strong interpersonal and collaborative relationships with people at all levels of an organization and working as part of a team.
  • Eager to learn and intellectually curious.
  • Have good judgment, a high level of professional integrity and the discretion to handle confidential and sensitive information

Qualifications:

  • J.D. with minimum 10 years of labor experience.
  • Extensive experience with collective bargaining agreements to include drafting, interpretation, compliance and enforcement.
  • Experience with professional unions.
  • In-house experience preferred.
  • Employment law experience preferred
